Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?
  • To register, fill out the Tour Registration Form. You may pay the registration fee by mail by check, money order, or credit card. See the Tour Registration Form for details.
  • All participants in each vehicle must be a member of the Lincoln Highway Association. A discount membership fee is included on the Tour Registration Form for your convenience.
  • Once we receive your Tour Registration Form and payment, we will send you a Tour Information Package which will include the Tour Password to access:
  • Tote bags, name badges, and car decals will be distributed at the Pre-Tour Dinner held the evening before we start the tour at the Packard Proving Grounds north of Detroit. Participants joining the tour after the first day will receive these items when they join the tour.
What does the registration fee cover?
  • Tour Password access to the Hotel Reservations Page
  • Tour Password access to the Tour Driving Instructions
  • Continental breakfast every morning at the host hotels
  • Lunch every noon except for the buffet at the Montego Bay in West Wendover, Nevada
  • Dinner every evening
  • Discount entry fees for the morning and afternoon stops
  • Official tour tote bag
  • Name badge/events pass
  • The registration fee for the driver includes two tour logo decals for the vehicle (either magnetic or low-tack)
Will there be official tour shirts available?
Yes. Official tour shirts can be ordered on the Tour Registration Form, and will also be available for purchase at the pre-tour dinner and during the tour.
Will I be able to receive a refund of my tour reservation if I decide later not to go?
Yes. The tour registration refund cut-off date is Friday, May 1, 2015 (the same date as the cut-off for tour reservations). Cancellation notices received (not postmarked) by that date will be honored.
Will there be family, group, club or senior discounts?
No. Because space is limited on the tours, at the meals, and at the host hotels, we are not able to offer discounts. Each person, whether or not they are part of a family, group or club, or a child or senior, is required to register at full price.
Will vehicles be allowed to “tag-along” behind the tour vehicles without paying for the tour?
No. We have heavy participation in our Lincoln Highway Tours. Tag-alongs create traffic problems and because of limited space, are prohibited from participation in any of the official tour stops or activities. Paid tour participants will be asked to show their tour name badges at all tour stops and activities to receive admission, meals and discounts. The tour stops are special events with only enough space and food planned for the paid tour participants.
How do I make my hotel arrangements?
Go to the Hotels Reservation page for information about discounted rates for the Holiday Inn for all overnight stops except Ely, Nevada, and the Hotel Nevada & Jailhouse Hotel for Ely, Nevada.

Note: Tour participants are not required to stay at the host hotels, but we highly encourage that you do, to enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie (and the free continental breakfasts!).

Will there be a tour guide?
Yes. Experienced Lincoln Highway guide Paul Gilger will be leading tour. Paul is chair of the Lincoln Highway Association National Mapping Committee and knows the route extremely well.
Will we be travelling in caravans?
  • No. In most states, it is illegal for cars to caravan in groups of 5 or more without a police escort. Also, large caravans are impossible to keep together when traveling through congested areas and business districts.
  • We suggest that during the tour people join up in groups of 2 or 3 cars and take turns leading, and for immediate help in case of an emergency or breakdown.
  • If you own a set of walkie-talkies, bring them along (with fresh batteries). You will find them useful communicating with the other cars you’ve chosen to travel with.
  • Morning stops, lunch stops and afternoon stops are scheduled over a range of time (usually about 2 hours each) so that people may travel along at their own leisure.
  • Dinner stops are usually scheduled for 7:30 pm, as we want the tour group to assemble each night to exchange stories of that day’s events and to hear instructions for the next day’s routes and activities.
What happens if my vehicle breaks down on the tour?
We will have a “Sweep Vehicle” bringing up the rear of the tour, to carry vehicles that break down to the next available auto repair, as needed.
What types of vehicles are eligible for the tour?
We encourage any type of vehicle from any year — cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, rentals, antiques, classics, hot rods, modern, foreign and domestic vehicles are all welcomed. We treat everybody with the same respect and consideration. We have one requirement: that your vehicle is capable of maintaining legal highway speeds, as portions of our tour will take us onto US Routes 30, 40, and 50, as well as Interstate 80.
Is non-ethanol gasoline available along the tour route?
Please see this website for locations of non-ethanol gasoline locations. (The Lincoln Highway Association is not responsible for the accuracy of the information on that page. Sorry.)
How many vehicles will be on the tours?
Due to the capacity at the host hotels, we are limiting the tour reservations to 65 vehicles (approximately 130 people).
Can I do just part of the tour?
Yes. You may join the tour anywhere along the route. Your “a la carte” entry fee will cover the cost of the items you receive on your portion of the trip. See the special instruction on the Tour Reservation Form.
How do I get a map and/or driving instructions for the tours?
For those who prefer printed maps: Print out the online maps at whatever zoom level you prefer and assemble a notebook for your use as you travel along. The map shows the tour routes, tour stops and all of the points of interest. When viewing the map, zoom in close. From far back, the tour routes may look like they are on US Route 30 and Interstate 80 (at times they are), but many times we are taking the original Lincoln Highway alignments which parallel these roads on one side or the other.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We recommend bringing printed Tour Driving Instructions.
Many tour participants bring iPads and tablets to access the online Tour Map and Tour Driving Instructions electronically while on the tour. However, there are stretches of the Lincoln Highway where cell phones and iPads have no reception, particularly outside the towns of Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. If you are planning on using your iPad or tablet as your primary guiding device, we highly recommend that you bring along a printed set of the Tour Driving Instructions as a safety backup.
