CARROLL COUNTY

Lincoln Highway County Consul (1924): N.M. Mackey, Ford Garage, Carroll

"It is hard to image the condition of the road in the second decade of the twentieth century, but one Glidden man described it through this actions.  In 1914 he chose to drive his Model T to Carroll on the C&NW tracks, preferring the bumps of the railroad ties to the ruts and mud of the Lincoln Highway.

Alice Ramsey, traveling the road six years earlier in her Maxwell, shared the sentiment, finding the road 'composed of a veritable sea of chuck holes or varying sizes, most of them so filled with water that it was difficult to determine their depths.'"
